Founded in 2005, the Northwest Indiana Housing Summit Conference (NWIHSC) began as a small number of service providers and advocacy groups each planning small, separate summits or conferences to address issues related to homelessness and affordable/fair housing in Northwest Indiana. Through the mobilization and coalition building efforts of the Continuum of Care Network of Northwest Indiana and The Race Relations Council of Northwest Indiana the NWIHSC was formed.
The first Housing Summit Conference was held in April 2005 and attracted more than 400 participants. Each year has seen a steady increase in attendees as well regional and state participation.
The NWIHSC is led by a steering committee comprised of individuals from around the region who represent a variety of municipal entities, advocacy groups, non-profit service providers, universities, financial institutions and housing industry practitioners.
The Northwest Indiana Housing Summit Conference is a vehicle designed to provide information exchange, technical assistance and training opportunities for consumers and providers of homelessness and affordable/fair housing services. Practitioners are drawn from many segments of the housing industry to increase awareness and promote understanding of practices and policies that impact affordable/fair housing in Northwest Indiana.
Over a short period, The NWI Housing Summit Conference has become a major regional forum to address fair/affordable housing and homeless issues. Major participation and support of the conference has come from a variety of non-profit and for profit entities, as well as statewide and federal housing agencies.
